Letter of intend signed between AoC and Council of Europe

"Council of Europe Secretary General Terry Davis will participate in the first annual Forum of the “Alliance of Civilizations” to be held in Madrid on January 15-16.

The Forum will be attended by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, Jorge Sampaio, High Representative of the “Alliance of Civilizations” and former President of Portugal. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, president of the government of Spain, and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister of Turkey, who first proposed the “Alliance of Civilizations” in 2005, will also attend together with prime ministers, ministers and representatives of governments, international institutions, foundations, the corporate sector and non-governmental organisations.

During the Forum Jorge Sampaio and Terry Davis will sign a Letter of Intent on the development of a "Memorandum of Understanding" on future co-operation between the Alliance and the Council of Europe.

The Secretary General will speak at the plenary session and take part in the High Level Political Dialogue of the Group of Friends, a network of over 70 governments and international organisations which support the work of the Alliance. He will express the Council of Europe’s commitment to the promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, important working areas of the organisation since its creation.

The Council of Europe’s principles on this issue are reflected in the White Paper on Intercultural Dialogue, which is currently being completed after an in-depth consultation process. Its aim is to formulate a coherent and long-term policy for the promotion of intercultural dialogue within Europe and between Europe and its neighbouring regions...."
