Córdoba boasts the unique claim of having been the capital of the Hispania Ulterior region of the Roman Empire and the capital of the Islamic Umayyad Caliphate.
The meeting will serve as a platform for debate on religious freedom in democratic society, with specific debates on: religious pluralism in democratic societies; the role of religious leaders in promoting a culture of peace; preventing religious radicalisation and extremism; and cooperation to promote religious freedom and interfaith dialogue.

Spain's Secretary of State for the EU, Diego López Garrido is also expected to attend as is the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain, Jacobo Israel Garzón, the Turkish prime minister's aide Ahmet Hadi Adanali, the French academic and expert in Islamic studies Olivier Roy, and Tariq Ramadan, a highly controversial representative of the European Moslem Network.

The meeting taking place on 3 and 4 May in the context of the Alliance of Civilizations National Plan, responds to a request by the UN High Representative, Dr Jorge Sampaio, for the action plan agreed on by the Alliance of Civilisations and the European Commission to be implemented. The conference will examine the following themes: religious pluralism in democratic societies; the role of religious leaders in promoting a culture of peace; preventing religious radicalisation and extremism; and cooperation to promote religious freedom and interfaith dialogue.."
