A highlight of this first conference will be the presentation of two awards. The first will be to honor Senators Nunn and Lugar for their vital contributions to the creation of Cooperative Threat Reduction with all its potential. The second award, to be named in honor of Senators Nunn and Lugar will be initiated as the biannual Nunn-Lugar International Global Science and Security Engagement Award. The honorees will be selected from among those globally who have contributed significantly to this effort. The first recipient of the Nunn-Lugar award will then be Professor Javier Solana, for his work as former EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union, former EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy on Terrorism and Intelligence Cooperation, and former Secretary General of NATO, ultimately responsible for NATO's Science and Security Program. The awards will be presented during the banquet on the first night of the meeting and as the name awardees Senators Nunn and Lugar will be invited to present joint keynote addresses to open the second day of the conference.
